Bangkok Hotels 2

                                     J.W. Marriott

This was the first J.W. Marriott in Thailand (there is a second in Phuket) so it had to be special – and it is. The hotel has special prices on its website all the time and bargains are to be had for this high quality property. Marriott Rewards members can also get good deals. It is a category five in their listings.
Like other top hotels, you pick up the phone and someone knows your name and wants to help. The operators of this service know in advance which language you speak. The hotel is close to the
Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, the World Trade Center and most of the major embassies.
It is difficult to think of anything that the 441 rooms and suites lack. In addition to the immaculate furnishings, you have the best in linens and towels. Quality throughout and even little details like those power adaptors are not forgotten. The least expensive rooms – 355 square-feet in size – are sound proofed and have an in-room safe, large writing desk with data port and power outlet, iron and ironing board, minibar, cable TV, coffee and tea making facilities and three telephones. The marble bathrooms have a tub and separate shower. A complimentary newspaper – in English – is delivered on weekday mornings. Internet access is available but you pay additional for that.
There is an excellent swimming pool, spa and health club with what was the largest fitness gymnasium of any
Bangkok hotel. So many new grand hotels have opened in the city it is impossible to keep up. The Bangkok Baking Company, on the ground floor, produces wonderful sandwiches and is a great place to have an inexpensive coffee and Danish if you can’t handle the bountiful breakfast buffet nearby.  There are ten excellent bars and restaurants. The buffet at the Marriott Café on the ground floor is truly international and deservedly has won numerous awards. Every kind of meat, poultry and fish is available. The variety and quality of shellfish is extraordinary and the dessert display would have given a calorie counter nightmares. This feast doesn’t come cheap at $32 but it is well worth it. Also noteworthy is the Man Ho Chinese Restaurant, known for its Cantonese and Szechwan specialties, the elegant New York Steakhouse – the name speaks for itself although you could add the words juicy and tender – and the White Elephant Thai Restaurant where the waiters are specially trained to explain in good English about all of the dishes. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. If you want to enjoy a little Thai music and dance come in the evening.
The location is a little out of the way for some of
Bangkok’s sights but taxis are cheap and the Skytrain system efficient. There is so much to enjoy that it is easy to spend several days without stepping outside the front entrance. .

                                             The Sukhothai Hotel
Is this the best hotel in Bangkok? Many say it is. Six acres of tropical gardens provide a tranquil setting for this extra special hotel, which provides the very best that Thailand has to offer. There are so many special touches and no type of traveler is forgotten. There is an extensive library; special hampers can be prepared for children, spacious teak-floored bathrooms, a super new spa (shown in the picture) gourmet dining, floodlit tennis courts and service second to none. If you venture outside – hard to do – you are close to the excellent shopping and the nightlife of Silom Road.
The least expensive rooms cover 38 square meters, have a queen-sized bed, and are furnished with teakwood and the finest Thai silks. The bathrooms have an oversized bathtub, separate shower and toilet enclosures, bathrobes, hair dryer, telephone and luxurious toiletries. The larger rooms, including 24 studios and different sized suites are all furnished to the same high standard. Internet access is available and room service is whenever you want it. The hotel's Celadon restaurant is one of Bangkok's most celebrated eating spots serving authentic Thai cuisine in classically designed, air-conditioned salas. Reservations are obligatory. Colonnade is the all-day dining restaurant with a very special Sunday brunch. Evenings here are special. Through tall windows, diners have a glimpse of the serene splendor of a bygone age reflected in the lighted water garden with its replica Buddhist stupas.  Other amenities: Same-day laundry service, parcel and postal services, 24-hour business center and a shopping arcade.  Sport facilities include a 25-meter outdoor infinity swimming pool. The Health Club has a a fully equipped, supervised gym; Jacuzzi, sauna, steam bath, whirlpool; aerobic classes in air-conditioned aerobics room; an air-conditioned squash court and a floodlit tennis court. Rates go from $390 for a superior room up to $2,800 for the Sukhothai suite. These rates are exclusive of service and taxes. The prices are high but this kind of quality does not come cheap especially when the rates exclude taxes and services. There are however times of the year when special packages bring down the prices substantially. Contact details: 13/3 South Sathorn Road, Bangkok 10120, Thailand.                                                 InterContinental Bangkok

This is an Intercontinental with lots of space, style, super service and a great location in the city’s best shopping district. It is expensive with rates ranging from $300 a night up to $2,000 plus for the royal suite. Check the website for special deals.
The award-winning buffet breakfast - no bargain at $30 – offers the regular eggs and bacon plus exotic dishes from around the world. An economic and good alternate is the hotel’s deli located on the ground floor where two can have an excellent Danish pastry with coffee and have change from $10. The hotel is within walking distance to
Bangkok’s Skytrain system, which gives inexpensive access to many parts of the city. Words of warning to those who like to stay close to sea level, the guest rooms do not start until the 18th floor. Location is a major plus – with the up-market Siam Shopping Center just across the street.
All 381 rooms and suites are spacious, lack nothing, and are tastefully and expensively furnished. Top marks too for bathrooms, towels and toiletries. Every room has a full size ironing board and iron, which avoids a call to housekeeping each time there is a collar or a sleeve needing a quick press.
All rooms have a daily newspaper delivered and have tea and coffee making facilities, a mini-bar, refrigerator and toaster. Additional items for those on the executive floor include butler service, complimentary breakfast, pre-dinner drinks and snacks.
Dining here is a delight no matter which of the four restaurants you select. The 24-hour room service is swift and stylish and considering this is a five star pr operty, the prices are reasonable. The swimming pool on the 37th floor is a haven away from the busy city below. Internet access in various forms is available for a fee. All the centers – beauty, business and fitness – are top class. The Espresso on the mezzanine floor serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and has an award-winning breakfast buffet. On the same floor is the Summer Palace, open for lunch and dinner, which serves authentic Cantonese cuisine including Dim Sum favorites.  The Shin Daikoku Japanese restaurant has six private rooms and is open for lunch and dinner.
If you are looking for something a little more casual, the Holiday Inn next door is highly recommended. Moreover, if you stay at that Holiday Inn you can use many of the services of the InterContinental.
